On Shoulders of Giants

The medical student must be a Naturalist so you can expect to become an epidemiologist scientific or practical pathologist capable. Sir Patrick Manson

few days ago I made some changes to my profile for many will have passed unnoticed. The most important change is the naturalist, I have decided to recall as such a name was given to scientists who study natural science or natural history through careful observation of nature. While the history goes back to Aristotle, the naturalist reached its height between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries, at the time of the great expeditions and colonization of new continents of Europe.

The conclusions are based on a Naturalist disciplined and patient contemplation. It is therefore an intellectual exercise and long-term solitary. Only after persistent observation and an ambition to capture all details can be obtained patterns, be they structural or behavioral.

These findings are recorded in the diaries of the expedition. Words and lines appear on the paper in an order that only understands the author. Later, after a calm reflection will transcribe their findings in a coherent text by following its own logic of thought.

result of this process, Aristotle in the V century AC dividing established a zoological classification of animals according to their blood content, means of locomotion or reproduction. In this way for centuries used the names of animals with blood or not, bipeds, quadrupeds or alias, and also viviparous, oviparous or ovoviviparous. For those animals, such as some insects, which did not identify a specific reproductive pattern placed them in a big bag animals conceptual called Spontaneous Generation.

Nearly 20 centuries later, under the same process Carl Linné (1758) in his "systemm Naturae" establishes a new classification system based this time in the comparison of anatomical structural similarities. This new system is quickly adopted by the naturalists of the late eighteenth century.

Naturalists addition to the quality of systematic observation versatility enjoyed a scientific and humanistic. This diversity in Naturalist conceptual erased at the time the rigid boundaries between science and art as we know them today. The explorers of yesteryear came imbued with philosophical knowledge Greco Latino as well as medieval and Renaissance theology. Intellectual hatching was highest after the Enlightenment. Through these concepts and understand the nature a state of harmony, so his books influenced both the design of the modern world.

take as an example to those, who toured America on as Charles Marie La Condamine, Alexander von Humboldt, Charles Darwin and Antonio Raimondi. A worldwide expansion of European empires imposed sponsoring expeditions to find not only the new territories but to maintain the imperial hegemony. Thus laid the foundations of the global metric to measure the length of a parallel to Ecuador, described numerous species and geographical living in America, and processes that explain the development of the crust and currents marinas. Perhaps the most famous and productive expedition to the natural sciences out of the Beagle, which carried Charles Darwin to write years later the Origin of Species and changed forever the concept of life on the planet.

Naturalists work generated not only numerous but also volumes of information were the basis of contemporary scientific findings and even generators may consider the identity of the New World. Re-evaluating and updating the ancient native works both Humboldt comoVon Darwin walked the Inca Trail, one by one by the North South

Explorers lands beyond the seas, perhaps the Naturalists have had tremendous domestic travel and no one would be excluded from being moved by the titanic rugged landscape of the Andes, Tierra del Fuego or the Rainforest. The result of these expeditions are abundant internal correspondence, texts and engravings, to clarify not only the nature but the man who runs.

This same sense of adventure also led to some doctors of the time to examine the behavior of disease in exotic regions. Sir Patrick Manson (1844 - 1922), doctor of the Imperial British Army in southern China conducted several studies to lay the foundations of the mosquito's role in the pathogenesis of malaria, dengue and filariasis, leaving side Miasma theory, present since the age of Hippocrates. And in Peru

our Tropical Medicine is also made of medical explorers who have had to deal with wild country microclimates of generators of a similar variety of infections, as evidenced by this paragraph of Dr. Carlos Monge, drawn from his complete works:

If these facts were not even enough to highlight our diverse tropical pathology review remains to be determined by morbid processes metazoan parasites in the human body or directly attacking him and found mostly in hot countries, This leads us immediately the need to consider the study of Natural History Medical.

Expeditions, notes, drawings, experiences, inner monologues are scattered on my desk waiting to be sorted. It is time to do so. So follow the footsteps of Naturalists, in real or imaginary trip to see much further for now I'm standing on the shoulders of giants

Tipping Point

True to what he calls the writer's social commitment Mario Vargas Llosa has written a letter to the President of Peru, Alan Garcia Perez. The reason: the Legislative Decree 1097 which clearly collides with respect for the established legal order and human rights.

MVLL The political relationship between AGP and always seemed dissonant, beyond maintaining a common view on the economic model, the political and moral foundations were divergent. The letter comes at the time the bizarre circumlocutions and statements of government members had reached its zenith and appeared to ignore the case made national and international claims.

The letter and lay down a minister and he dragged the entire cabinet:

Paris, September 13
HE, 2010. HE Dr. Alan Garcia Perez President of Peru

Lima

Mr. President,

I hereby give you my irrevocable resignation to the Commission in charge of the place of memory whose presidency did you have to either trust me and I accepted convinced that his government was determined to continue the development of democracy in Peru so damaged by crime and theft from the dictatorship of Fujimori and Montesinos.

The reason for my resignation is the recent Legislative Decree 1097 which, obviously, is a thinly disguised amnesty to benefit a good number of people linked to the dictatorship and convicted or prosecuted for crimes against human rights, killings, torture and disappearances, including former dictator himself and his right arm. The move has outraged all democratic sectors of the country and international public opinion, as evidenced by the pronouncements of the Rapporteur of the UN, the Human Rights Commission, the Episcopal Conference, the Ombudsman and representatives of various social organizations and policies, including some congressmen APRA. I fully agree with these protests.

There is, in my opinion, an essential incompatibility between on the one hand, sponsoring the erection of a monument to the victims of violence unleashed by the Shining Path terrorism since 1980 and, secondly, by opening the back door legal trick from prison who, in the As part of this disastrous rebellion of fans also committed heinous crimes and helped to sow hatred, blood and suffering of Peruvian society.

I do not know what pressures the military sectors that thrived under the dictatorship and not resign themselves to democracy, or what considerations tiny electoral politics have led you to protect an initiative that will only bring discredit their government and to account those who accuse him of secretly agreed in close collaboration with the same Fujimori that he was exiled and persecuted for eight years. In any case, what happened is a disgrace that will resurrect the division and political rancor in the country, especially in a period of exceptionally beneficial for the development and during an electoral process that should serve rather to strengthen our law and our customs democratic.

Although political opponents have been at odds in the past, in the last election I voted for you and I urged Peruvians to do the same to avoid Peru a We have derived depleted extremist and deranged. And I've publicly celebrated in Peru and abroad, its healthy correction of ideas, especially economic policy, which has been so good consequences for the progress and the image of Peru in recent years. Hopefully you have the same value to rectify once again to abolish this nefarious decree and seek allies among Peruvians decent and democratic brought him to power with their votes instead of searching among the heirs of an authoritarian regime that plunged Peru into the ignominy of corruption and crime and continue to plot to resurrect such abjection.

Yours sincerely,
Mario Vargas Llosa

sensed that this would come sooner or later, like water and oil can not mix. It is a healthy turning point.

Resaca de la FIL: dos

Vista through the sieve of the distance I can say that the IDF Lima was not what I expected. A simple exercise was to submit to the Fair to the following question: What makes a cultural event has significance?: Will the guests? "The agenda? Are events extraliterary? Is Local? Do the publications? Are the notes in the press? Are the sales?

Each party may argue in its favor on the number of visitors, sales, space and parallel to the musical program. It is good that in a country with such poor read rates have Fair visitors and buyers. But not just the quantity but also quality. Not all development is also growing.

sales appear to have been good, and that's good to grow the business. The agenda was planted this book presentations and literary activity shows that walk right foot. The tributes were well deserved and timely. The fair is a good place to rediscover friends and make new ones. It is an opportunity to renew the "social contract" among publishers, writers and readers.

However, in terms of impact I have my doubts. A Fair Lima heavyweights fail, the agenda has not been discussed or those important topics were regarded tangentially during the presentation of some books. The facts of the fair did not "bounce" in the circles beyond our borders. Moreover, some publishers struggled to update their catalog, but other heavy artillery came a month after the fair, a fact that I have seen recently. In this year only in Latin America we felt the shockwave of Festivals in Cartagena, Puerto Rico, Bogota, Montevideo and now we are connected to what occurs in Buenos Aires

reader not only a writer but as expected more. The debate of ideas, variety can reach consensus. The fair is a good opportunity to assess trends in fiction, poetry and national test, the current situation of publishers, both traditional and independent labels, and the current role of literary criticism and blogs, the constant threat of piracy, which attack both the digital and the printed paper, "The role of educational, cultural and libraries. If this has not been discussed openly little we can talk about the future, including this e-book. At the last IDF our best writers residents and visitors could be better utilized. Last Fair

has been prepared with the support of the Peruvian Chamber of Books, publishers, distributors and writers. But aside from the necessary licenses has been little official support (except for live broadcasts of a cultural channel state). What was not enough, it was a missed opportunity because it was the joint creation of the Ministry of Culture. And there seems to be lack of a sense of opportunity, because in his time up Chespirito was honored in both palaces, and the Municipal Government. A ministry is not enough but a cultural vision, comprehensive and inclusive, something that must be understood as a state policy. Can we call flagship product? It does not matter, but we must get to work

In such a scenario, in the remainder of the year we still have some local fairs and the culmination of Ricardo Palma, I hope to return to its original place for the good of all. A good incentive that should not be lost because the book closer to areas where there is not even bookstores. And for the next IDF 2011, it is time to start thinking, organizing work teams, to lay the foundations of an event that should be the annual milestone of our national literature.
